NARHA Section Membership Changes
By Jama Rice, Director of Membership

In an effort to simplify the membership structure and fees NARHA has been cleaning up some section memberships and reflecting that on our new and renewing member applications.

The Administrative section is being dissolved as a member section effective January 1, 2009. The Admin Voice will still be available as a membership benefit to all center and individual members and available electronically in the members only section of the NARHA website.

The Higher Ed section is being dissolved effective January 1 as no incremental benefits accrued to members of this section. There are efforts underway to establish an institutional membership targeted to universities, colleges and other organizations involved in educating future members of the equine assisted activities and therapies industry. That membership will be focused at an institutional level as opposed to an individual section membership.

EFMHA is still a membership section available to NARHA members with EFMHA News and discounts on Equine Specialist workshops as added benefits.

Instructor section membership is also available for individual members who are not NARHA certified instructors who wish to receive the Instructor Voice.

The New NARHA Instructor Workbook and DVD is a great educational tool for those studying to become NARHA Certified Instructors. It is also a valuable resource for improving current skills using the quizzes and interactive activities from the workbook which tie to the DVD chapter by chapter. Many of our centers have purchased and used this educational tool and are now requesting extra workbooks for use with the DVD already purchased. Workbooks are now available at the following prices, including member and quantity discounts:

Center Renewal Dues and Accreditation
Fees for Premier Accredited Centers
Q & A
Q: What is the accreditation fee listed on our NARHA center renewal invoice?

A: Many Premier Accredited Centers have been calling and asking just that question. The fee for accreditation for centers that achieved Premier Accredited status prior to January 1, 2009, is $500. Paying this fee at one time could be a deterrent to becoming a Premier Accredited Center. To encourage centers to become premier accredited the fee is broken into five payments of $100 each to be paid over a five year period (the length of a center's premier accredited status).

Q: Why have I not seen this fee before?
A: The $100 accreditation fee was included in the $325 membership dues and not listed separately. With the new membership dues structure the $100 accreditation fee is not included and should be added to the invoice separately.

The NARHA Board of Trustees voted for an increase in accreditation fees effective January 1, 2009. Any center becoming accredited or re-accredited after January 1, 2009, will pay accreditation fees of $750, broken into payments of $150 over the 5-year period of NARHA Premier accredited status.

The Kentucky Department of Agriculture has announced that a quarter horse stallion has tested positive for Contagious Equine Metritis (CEM), a foreign animal disease not found in the United States.

The American Horse Council has been in contact with Kentucky Department of Agriculture and USDA representatives regarding this situation. A letter was sent to USDA from the AHC urging USDA to move forward quickly to implement unified and cohesive protocols between all states involved and to locate and test all involved horses in order to protect the U.S. horse industry from further spread of the disease and ensure that the U.S. can maintain its status of being free of CEM and allow continued movement of horses.

Contagious Equine Metritis is a transmissible, exotic venereal disease in horses. It usually results in infertility in mares and, on rare occasions, can cause mares to spontaneously abort. Infected stallions exhibit no clinical signs but can carry the CEM bacteria for years. There is no evidence that CEM affects people. The disease can be treated with disinfectants and antibiotics.

Please contact the AHC with any questions.
